Delafield water, by the numbers
In Delafield the utility is almost beside the point. The city says plainly that most residents have private wells, so what people here actually live with is raw Waukesha County groundwater that nobody samples but them.
Where Delafield’s water comes from
Delafield is served by the City of Delafield waterworks, which by the city’s own account serves a minority of residents. It runs two municipal wells: one 1,215 feet into the deep sandstone, one 220 feet into the shallow aquifer. DNR records the system as 100% groundwater with no purchased water.
Two municipal wells, sampled the same day: 240 mg/L at the deep well, 400 mg/L at the shallow one.
DNR compliance samples taken on the same day measured 240 milligrams per liter at the 1,215-foot deep well and 400 at the 220-foot shallow well. That is 14.0 grains and 23.4 grains from one system on one day. Those figures apply only to the minority of Delafield on the municipal system.

Two wells, two aquifers, nearly double the hardness
If two municipal wells a few thousand feet apart differ by nine grains on the same day, two private wells on the same road can too. This is the clearest argument in the county for reading your own tap rather than borrowing a neighbor’s number.
Iron right at the staining line, and chloride climbing
Delafield’s shallow well has measured 0.35, 0.40 and 0.40 milligrams per liter of iron across 2008, 2017 and 2026, against the EPA secondary standard of 0.3 where staining becomes noticeable. Chloride in that same well climbed from 6.4 mg/L in 2008 to 89 mg/L in 2026, with sodium rising alongside it. Road salt reaching a shallow aquifer is a documented local trend, and one more reason the number at your tap today is the only one worth acting on.
What we would actually do here

If the numbers justify softening we size it from them; if they point at a drinking-water tap instead, that is what the quote says.
