What a water softener costs in Waukesha County

One published number, what it covers, and what you keep paying after. Written from the same figures the quote is built on.

The short answer

$3,950 installed is the published price of the ZeroGrain One: a demand-metered softener with activated carbon in the same tank, plus the five-stage reverse-osmosis tap at the kitchen sink, installed by an independent licensed Wisconsin plumbing contractor who pulls any required permit. Installation is in that number, not added to it. It is one configuration, and whether it is the build your house needs comes down to four things.

What is inside that number

  • The equipment, named by model on the quote. The softening tank with 10% crosslinked resin under granular activated coconut-shell carbon, the brine tank, the ceramic-disc metered valve with its 72-hour memory backup, and the reverse-osmosis unit with its own faucet.
  • The installation. An independent licensed Wisconsin plumbing contractor, working under a responsible master plumber, with any required permit pulled in the plumber’s own name. Softener drain lines and reverse-osmosis lines are plumbing under Wisconsin law.
  • The retest. On a softener install the plumber reads hardness at your tap after the work, as part of the installation. Full payment is due when the installation is complete.

What the call checks against your house

  1. Your hardness. Most towns here publish it, and it is on this site town by town. Lake Michigan supply runs about 8 grains; most municipal wells here run 14 to 35 in published and state-sampled figures. The number sets how the softener is programmed.
  2. Iron. On a well, iron past a point wants its own treatment stage ahead of the softener rather than being pushed through the resin. If your well is past that point, the call tells you before anything is quoted.
  3. Household size and peak flow. People in the house set gallons per day; the fixtures that can run at once set the valve settings.
  4. The drinking-water stage. Reverse osmosis at the kitchen sink is part of the ZeroGrain One and part of the $3,950.

What you keep paying: salt and filters

Salt is arithmetic, not a measurement: hardness times daily use gives the grains the resin removes each day, and the salt follows from how often it regenerates, so it depends on your hardness, your household and the salt setting. A demand-metered unit regenerates when the water it has actually treated says so.

The reverse-osmosis stage changes its pre- and post-filters every six to twelve months depending on the model, which the quote names, and the membrane every three to five years. It is a fifteen-minute job the plumber can do on a scheduled visit, or we show you how to do it yourself. No service contract is required.

What hard water costs you without one

Hard water looks perfectly clear in the glass; the number is what is dissolved in it. Scale blankets the heating surface in the water heater, so the same hot shower slowly takes more energy. Dishwashers, coffee makers and fixtures scale up and die young. Soap stops working: cloudy glasses, stiff towels, film on the shower door. None of that shows up as a line on a bill, which is exactly why it is easy to keep paying it.

How the quote works

By phone, about fifteen minutes. We size from your town’s published number, or your well’s lab result, and your household, and you end the call with a one-page itemized quote that holds for 30 days. It does not move at the table, because nobody is at your table: the first person in your house is the licensed plumber, on install day. There is no tonight price. Paying by credit card adds a processing fee, which the quote shows; paying by check or bank transfer does not. After you sign, you have three business days to cancel in writing, and the install is scheduled after that window and once the equipment is in hand and approved for use in Wisconsin (SPS 384): a morning’s work, on a date you pick.

Published September 23, 2026. Figures are the ones on the quote and on this site; town hardness is each utility’s own published number, or Wisconsin DNR compliance samples where it publishes none, linked from the hardness guide.

Price and payment

Questions this guide gets asked

Is $3,950 installed the price for every house?

Yes. It is our only price, for the ZeroGrain One, and it does not move at the table. If your water needs something the ZeroGrain One is not built for, such as heavy iron on a private well, the call tells you so rather than selling you this one.

Does the price include installation and the permit?

Yes. Installation by an independent licensed Wisconsin plumbing contractor is in the number, and the plumber pulls any required permit in their own name. Nothing is added for either later.

When do I pay?

The quote states the schedule: full payment is due when the installation is complete, and the retest at your tap is part of the installation. The written terms also give you three business days after signing to cancel in writing.

How much salt will it use?

It depends on your hardness, your household and the salt setting, and the call works it out from your number. Hartford’s sewer utility calls a demand-metered softener the more efficient type for salt, and sizing from your actual water rather than a catalog is the other half of keeping it down.

Three things you get in writing

“Trust us” isn’t a policy. These are.

Every one of these is written on the quote or the agreement, not a promise on a call.

3 daysTo change your mind Three business days to cancel after you sign, as a written term of our agreement. Two copies of the cancellation notice come with the contract: filled in, dated, ready to mail.
0Balance due before the install is complete You do not pay the balance until the system is in, running and your water is retested at your tap. Full payment at completion is written into the agreement.
30 daysThe quote holds One page, itemized, good for 30 days, with every model named so you can compare it against anyone. Nobody will ask you to sign tonight, and the price is the same next week.
