Water softener installation in Grafton, WI

About 22 grains per gallon · Grafton’s published figure

Grafton’s own utility says its water typically requires an in-home softener. That is about as clear a brief as a utility ever hands its residents.

Where Grafton gets its water

Grafton is served by the Village of Grafton water utility. It pumps six active deep wells, and every one of them draws from the Niagara dolomite aquifer.

about 22grains per gallon, published

The Village’s 2025 water quality report: approximately 22 grains, 377 ppm on average.

The Village says it in its annual report: the supply contains approximately 22 grains of hardness, and the 2025 average was 377 parts per million. Its own website goes further and calls the water very hard, the kind that typically requires the private use of an in-home water softener.

What Grafton homes usually need

  • Free quote by phone
  • Installed by a licensed WI plumber
  • Softeners retested to zero

$3,950 installed for the ZeroGrain One: softener, activated carbon and the reverse-osmosis drinking tap. Installation by an independent licensed Wisconsin plumbing contractor is in that number, not added to it, and the date is set once the equipment is in hand and approved for use in Wisconsin (SPS 384). What a softener costs explains what the $3,950 includes. Swapping out an old unit is replacing a softener; the drinking tap is reverse osmosis installation.

Questions

Grafton water questions

Anything that is not here, ask it on the call.

Softening removes hardness minerals. It is not a health or safety treatment and we do not market it as one. On a private well, Wisconsin’s state-certified lab tests for bacteria and nitrates are a separate matter and not something we sell.

One aquifer, six wells, all of it hard

Every active village well draws from the Niagara dolomite, and the Village explains that the hardness forms as the water passes through that rock and dissolves calcium and magnesium. The roughly 22 grains in the report is a property of the aquifer, not a quirk of one well.

At 22 grains, sizing is the whole job

Water this hard puts scale on a heating element year after year, and a softener sold off a shelf either burns salt or lets hardness through between regenerations. Wisconsin’s plumbing code, SPS 382.40(8)(j), calls for a demand-initiated softener with a meter or sensor, and that is the only kind we supply.

How does the quote work in Grafton?

We start from the number, not from a catalog: what Grafton publishes, and what your house needs. One short call puts the two together, at no charge. If the numbers justify softening we size it from them; if they point away from softening, the call says so plainly. On install day the plumber reads hardness, iron, chlorine and TDS at your tap before anything is connected, and on a softener install retests hardness at the end so you watch it read zero.
