Water softener installation in Mequon, WI

About 8 grains per gallon · Mequon’s published figure for municipal water

Mequon’s utility sells some of the softest tap water in this area, and most of Mequon does not buy it. In a city this large and this spread out, the tap in your own kitchen is the only source of truth.

Where Mequon gets its water

Mequon is served by the Mequon Water Utility, which buys finished water for resale and treats none of its own. It resells purchased Lake Michigan water from Milwaukee Water Works and the North Shore Water Commission. Most of the city is not connected to it and draws from private wells.

about 8grains per gallon, published for municipal water

On the municipal system. Most of Mequon is not on it.

The Mequon Water Utility purchases treated Lake Michigan water from the North Shore Water Commission and Milwaukee Water Works for resale. Both publish roughly 137 milligrams per liter, about 8 grains per gallon. The important qualifier, as Urban Milwaukee reported in 2023: most residents of Mequon continue to rely on their own wells, and a private well carries no published figure.

What Mequon homes usually need

  • Free quote by phone
  • Installed by a licensed WI plumber
  • Softeners retested to zero

$3,950 installed for the ZeroGrain One: softener, activated carbon and the reverse-osmosis drinking tap. Installation by an independent licensed Wisconsin plumbing contractor is in that number, not added to it, and the date is set once the equipment is in hand and approved for use in Wisconsin (SPS 384). What a softener costs explains what the $3,950 includes. Swapping out an old unit is replacing a softener; the drinking tap is reverse osmosis installation.

Questions

Mequon water questions

Anything that is not here, ask it on the call.

Softening removes hardness minerals. It is not a health or safety treatment and we do not market it as one. On a private well, Wisconsin’s state-certified lab tests for bacteria and nitrates are a separate matter and not something we sell.

The utility number and the city number are different things

Roughly eleven thousand people are on the Mequon system, in a city considerably larger than that. Quoting “Mequon water is 8 grains” describes the utility, not the city. If you are on a well you are drawing Ozaukee County groundwater out of the same carbonate rock Cedarburg’s wells draw from, and a private well has no published figure.

Well houses are where sizing actually matters

Hardness and iron vary house by house on a private well, not neighborhood by neighborhood. A system specified from your own numbers treats the hardness at the point of entry, with iron in its own stage ahead of it when there is more than a trace, and after a softener install the plumber runs the same test again and you watch the hardness read zero.

How does the quote work in Mequon?

We start from the number, not from a catalog: what Mequon publishes, and what your house needs. One short call puts the two together, at no charge. If the numbers justify softening we size it from them; if they point away from softening, the call says so plainly. On install day the plumber reads hardness, iron, chlorine and TDS at your tap before anything is connected, and on a softener install retests hardness at the end so you watch it read zero.
