Water softener installation in West Bend, WI
25–31 grains per gallon · West Bend’s published figure
West Bend publishes its hardness where you would least expect it, in a sewer utility newsletter telling residents how to set their softeners. At 25 to 31 grains it is some of the hardest municipal water in this market.

Where West Bend gets its water
West Bend is served by the City of West Bend Water Utility. It supplies the city entirely from groundwater pumped from wells across the city.
The City’s sewer utility gives 25 to 31 grains as the proper softener setting.
The water utility’s annual report lists no hardness. The City’s sewer utility fills the gap: its 2026 newsletter says the proper setting for a water softener in its service area is 25 to 31 grains of hardness. DNR compliance samples from March 2026 read 360 milligrams per liter at one entry point and 540 at another, about 21 and 32 grains per gallon.

What West Bend homes usually need

- Free quote by phone
- Installed by a licensed WI plumber
- Softeners retested to zero
$3,950 installed for the ZeroGrain One: softener, activated carbon and the reverse-osmosis drinking tap. Installation by an independent licensed Wisconsin plumbing contractor is in that number, not added to it, and the date is set once the equipment is in hand and approved for use in Wisconsin (SPS 384). What a softener costs explains what the $3,950 includes. Swapping out an old unit is replacing a softener; the drinking tap is reverse osmosis installation.

Questions
West Bend water questions
Anything that is not here, ask it on the call.
Softening removes hardness minerals. It is not a health or safety treatment and we do not market it as one. On a private well, Wisconsin’s state-certified lab tests for bacteria and nitrates are a separate matter and not something we sell.
Why the sewer utility cares
Softener discharge carries chloride to the treatment plant, and West Bend runs a chloride reduction program because of it. The City’s sewer use ordinance and the state’s rules call for high-efficiency softeners that regenerate on demand, and the sewer utility publishes the setting it wants residents to use. A softener set higher than the water needs wastes salt and sends more of it down the drain.
Twenty-five grains and up
This is the hardness bracket where a timer-based softener shows its cost every month in salt, and an undersized one runs out between regenerations and puts hard water back at the tap. A demand-initiated unit is what the City’s ordinance calls for, and it is the only kind we supply.
How does the quote work in West Bend?
We start from the number, not from a catalog: what West Bend publishes, and what your house needs. One short call puts the two together, at no charge. If the numbers justify softening we size it from them; if they point away from softening, the call says so plainly. On install day the plumber reads hardness, iron, chlorine and TDS at your tap before anything is connected, and on a softener install retests hardness at the end so you watch it read zero.
