River Hills, Milwaukee County

River Hills water, by the numbers

River Hills is the largest-lot community in the county, and lot size is exactly why most of it is still on private wells. The village got a municipal option in 2023; it did not get a municipal water report.

Where River Hills’s water comes from

River Hills is served by the Mequon Water Utility, which extended service into the village in 2023. Connected properties are on purchased Lake Michigan water. Most of the village is still on private wells.

no published figure

There is no single River Hills number to publish. Connected properties are on purchased Lake Michigan supply at roughly 8 grains. The rest of the village is on private wells drawing local groundwater, and a private well has no annual report, no utility sampling schedule and no published figure at all.

Two supplies, no average worth quoting

Publishing a village-wide hardness number here would be inventing one. A connected house is on lake water in the region of 8 grains; a well house is drawing groundwater that could read anywhere in the county range. Both are real, and only a test at your own tap tells you which conversation you are having.

What a well house should have read

On a private well we read hardness and iron together, because iron changes what the system has to be, and check pH and TDS alongside them. For bacteria and nitrates we point you at Wisconsin’s state-certified labs. Those tests are not something we sell, and any honest water company will tell you the same.

What we would actually do here

The same thing we do everywhere: read your tap before recommending anything. Hardness, iron, chlorine and TDS, on the spot, in front of you, at no charge. If the numbers justify softening we size it from them; if they point at a drinking-water tap instead, that is what the quote says. On a softener install we run the same test at the end and you watch it read zero.

Softening removes hardness minerals. It is not a health or safety treatment and we do not market it as one. On a private well, Wisconsin’s state-certified lab tests for bacteria and nitrates are a separate matter and not something we sell.

A hardness titration test on a kitchen table

What happens next

  1. We test. Hardness, iron, chlorine and TDS, read on the spot in front of you. Nothing leaves for a lab.
  2. We quote. One page, itemized, good for 30 days. Take it, compare it, sleep on it.
  3. A licensed plumber installs. Its own scheduled visit, permits pulled. A morning’s work.
  4. We retest to zero. On a softener install, the same test again, and you watch the number land.

In writing, before you sign: Wisconsin’s three-business-day right to cancel an in-home sale, no final payment until the system is installed and verified, and the complete written warranty. Terms apply.
