Where Hartford gets its water
Hartford is served by Hartford Utilities, the city’s water utility. It pumps five wells, 50 to 180 feet deep, all in the shallow sand-and-gravel aquifer the last glacier left behind, and the water comes out of the ground at a constant 50 degrees.
The City says water from its utility is typically 18 to 22 grains.
The water utility’s annual report lists no hardness. The City of Hartford Sewer Utility, in chloride guidance revised January 2023, says water from the City’s water utility is typically between 18 and 22 grains per gallon, and asks residents to reset softeners to 20, noting factory presets can be as high as 30. DNR compliance samples at its five wells in February 2026 read higher: 390 to 450 milligrams per liter, about 23 to 26 grains.

What Hartford homes usually need

- Free quote by phone
- Installed by a licensed WI plumber
- Softeners retested to zero
$3,950 installed for the ZeroGrain One: softener, activated carbon and the reverse-osmosis drinking tap. Installation by an independent licensed Wisconsin plumbing contractor is in that number, not added to it, and the date is set once the equipment is in hand and approved for use in Wisconsin (SPS 384). What a softener costs explains what the $3,950 includes. Swapping out an old unit is replacing a softener; the drinking tap is reverse osmosis installation.

Questions
Hartford water questions
Anything that is not here, ask it on the call.
Softening removes hardness minerals. It is not a health or safety treatment and we do not market it as one. On a private well, Wisconsin’s state-certified lab tests for bacteria and nitrates are a separate matter and not something we sell.
Two official numbers that disagree
The City’s 2023 guidance says typically 18 to 22 grains. The state’s February 2026 samples at its five wells measured about 23 to 26. Both are official, and the gap is the everyday reason to size from the number at your own tap rather than a figure in a pamphlet. The plumber reads it on install day before anything is connected.
Set it for the water, not the factory
Hartford asks residents to reset softeners because factory presets can run as high as 30 grains, and every grain set above what the water needs is salt headed for the treatment plant. Hartford’s sewer utility also calls a demand-initiated softener the more efficient type for salt and water, and that is the only kind we supply.
How does the quote work in Hartford?
We start from the number, not from a catalog: what Hartford publishes, and what your house needs. One short call puts the two together, at no charge. If the numbers justify softening we size it from them; if they point away from softening, the call says so plainly. On install day the plumber reads hardness, iron, chlorine and TDS at your tap before anything is connected, and on a softener install retests hardness at the end so you watch it read zero.
